Family Ties
Every family acquires a network of ties over time. For simplicity we divide the ties we wish to note in this section in Friends, Fellow Travelers and those we have “lost in the fog” of life.
It should be noted that many people who appear as “Fellow Travelers” have our friendship. The thing about friendship is that it is not something you can take or demand and it is also not something to can refuse. You can only choose to give it or not.
Thus it is possible to be a friend to someone who is not a friend to you. For me the essence of true friendship is to put a very high premium on the well-being and happiness of someone including on occasions where their well-being may risk your own
In the Christian tradition the ultimate form of this idea is captured as “No greater love hath a man than to give his life for a friend.”
